Our Story So Far
Our venue is one of Erskineville’s longest-standing local institutions.
Originally known as the Erskineville Hotel, the venue eventually embraced the affectionate nickname locals had used for decades, “The Erko”.
The Erko is one of Sydney’s classic Inner West pubs, closely tied to the working-class and later bohemian area.
The Erko has proudly served the Erskineville community since 1882, including the blue-collar, brickmaking, and market-gardening communities of early Erskineville.
The suburb grew rapidly after the railway arrived in the 1870s, and hotels became focal points of neighbourhood life.
In the late 19th century, when our venue first opened its doors, Erskineville was a dense industrial suburb, home to railway workers, factory labourers and tradespeople.
The Erko’s “second life”
The original Victorian-era pub was demolished in the late 1920s so the road could be widened. The current building was designed in 1938 by architects Copeman Lemont and Keesing in the Art Deco style, which swept the world between 1919 and 1939, originating in France and quickly spreading as the world’s first “global style”.
It is recognised as a notable example of interwar pub architecture and is listed on the RAIA Register of 20th Century Significant Buildings.
The Erko reflects our neighbourhood’s industrial past. For decades, Erskineville was home to tanneries, brickworks, and factories. The local hotels served as the community living rooms for the factory workers who lived in the area.
The Erko was a crucial community hub: a venue for union meetings, social clubs, live music and local politics as much as coming in for a drink.
Today, the surviving pubs in the area have transitioned into gastropubs and live entertainment venues while retaining their structural heritage.
Over the decades, the pub evolved alongside the area. By the late 20th century, Erskineville and neighbouring Newtown were transforming from industrial districts into creative and alternative cultural hubs. The Erko became known for live music, laid-back beer-garden culture, and a strong local identity – more of a community pub than a flashy nightlife venue.
It later developed a reputation as a welcoming meeting place for musicians, artists, students, young families and long-term locals.
In the 2000s and 2010s, as the inner west gentrified, our venue underwent major refurbishments while ensuring the pub’s local character was preserved.
The Erko today
Evolving over the years from a rough and tumble local institution to a family-friendly hot spot for the community, The Erko has reflected the changes in Erskineville itself.
Today, The Erko remains a symbol of the suburb’s identity: a mix of old working-class Sydney, alternative culture, and contemporary inner-west hospitality, a central part of the tradition of inner-west pubs making a significant contribution to Sydney’s thriving live-music and social scene.
Our venue is proud to still be “the locals’ local”.

Bring your furry friends
We love being dog-friendly throughout the entire venue, which makes us a big drawcard to the local dog parents. We are also big on sport, showing as many live games as possible.
We love your pup as much as you, so we have water bowls in the beer garden, treats behind the bar, and even a special menu for them!
Our Community
Erskineville is a village, and we are proud to have been part of it for nearly 150 years.
Many of our locals have lived here for many years. Being in the Inner West of Sydney, we are a queer-friendly area, and our eclectic mix of patrons is an illustration of that.
We are a very community-focused area, and our venue celebrates that diversity.
